Walks with Wardens – Sunrise with Starlings

Join us for a six hour tour (including breakfast) to experience the magic of a starling eruption as they wake up with our wardening team at RSPB Ham Wall. The starling murmurations of the Avalon Marshes are a wonder of the natural world with over half a million birds roosting in the reedbeds. With exclusive access to parts of the reserve normally closed to visitors, absorb the sights and sounds not just the starlings but all of the reedbed waking up in winter, find the wildlife hidden within and learn more about the varied reserve management work that goes on behind the scenes.

RSPB Ham Wall is a special place teeming with amazing wildlife, panoramic views and the sound of the reeds swaying in the wind all year round. Not only that, the Avalon Marshes are one of, if not the best place in the country to see bittern, with approximately one third of the UK’s population of booming males recorded here in 2018. Bittern are just one of the five heron species you might see in a day at Ham Wall – great white egret are now a regular fixture, cattle egret bred here in 2017 (the first time on an RSPB reserve), grey herons nest in the reeds and little egrets can be seen fishing around the edges.

As well as the chance to see some of the fantastic wildlife that Ham Wall has to offer, you will also learn about the work the staff and volunteer team undertakes managing, surveying and protecting this special landscape and this is your opportunity to go behind the scenes to areas not normally accessible to visitors. All of this makes for an unmissable experience so why not book your place on this exclusive tour (numbers are limited) to join our wardening team today.

What makes ‘Walks with Wardens at Ham Wall’ unique?

  • You will be led by expert local guides, who also happen to be the very people responsible for managing, surveying and protecting this wonderful landscape.
  • Learn about why and how we manage sites for wildlife too.
  • Profits go straight back in to wildlife conservation at the place you’ve visited.
