Learning

The Avalon Marshes provide a rich source of learning opportunities that are being harnessed through a variety of resources and activities for schools, colleges and the wider community.

Schools and Colleges

Following the success of the Avalon Marshes Landscape Partnership scheme, which involved many schools and colleges in its activities, we have reviewed future provision.  This will be to split into three different types of activities focussed on the Avalon Marshes:

Teaching Resources

There is a menu of resources downloadable from the website which will enable schools to run their own activities drawing on the resources developed during the scheme.  There are also four specialist equipment workshops that are best used in association with one of the partners or at one of the events that the partnership will continue to run.

Wildife School Visits

Activities and sessions focussed on wildlife are run at the Avalon Marshes Centre and out on the nature reserves, in particular Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath, by the RSPB.

For more information contact the RSPB Ham Wall Office. Email ham.wall@rspb.org.uk or phone 01458 860494

Heritage School Visits

Once the historic reconstructions are completed activities relating to archaeology, history and heritage will be run by the South West Heritage Trust at the Avalon Marshes Centre.  In the meantime, the Trust may be able to lay on activities elsewhere.  Email info@swheritage.co.uk or phone 01823 278805

Avalon Marshes Family Wildlife Group

The Family Wildlife Group’s activities are aimed at children aged 5 -12 years old and their families. The age-guide is not strict however, so please feel welcome to bring along toddlers and teens too, with any number of accompanying parents, grandparents or other family and friends. The main idea is to get everyone out enjoying and exploring nature. The sessions are led by reserve staff and volunteers who are very knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife.

Find details of the next sessions in on our Events page.
